Venous angiomas are uncommon vascular malformations of the brain, especially when they occur in the spinal cord, as they are characterized by a low incidence and atypical clinical presentation. The authors’ experience with the radiological assessment of intracranial venous angiomas is described, on the basis of a retrospective study of 19 patients (nine men and ten women), aged from 2 to 55 years (mean age, 27.2 years). The lesion was on the right in 10 cases, left in 9 cases and bilateral in 6 cases. All lesions were supratentorial. Venous angiomas were hypointense on T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images and hyperintense on T2-weighted MR images. Enhancement was identified after intravenous injection of contrast medium in 11 of 14 cases. The typical MR pattern of venous angiomas in our experience was useful not only for the assessment of the size and the site of the lesion, but also for the identification of the venous sinus involved, the intracerebral parenchyma that has been affected or the cavernous sinus that has been filled by the lesion. The CT findings of venous angiomas were mostly unspecific, except for an increase in attenuation of the veins, due to an altered radiodensity of the sinus walls. It is conceivable that the extension of the venous angiomas, despite the narrow prevalence of venous angiomas in the cranial vault, is under-estimated with regard to this study.George H. Corn

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare emergency condition requiring liver transplantation (LTx). Unfortunately, this treatment is often unavailable. As an alternative, extracorporeal lactate removal (ELR) is successfully used in severe acute hepatic failure. Here we report our early experience in ELR for ALF patients who were intolerant to orthotopic liver transplantation (OLTx) due to the loss of graft function caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury. The system was cleared by the FDA for human use (ELRAIL™) and used in 14 ALF patients. Three patients died before ELR treatment. Two non-OLTx patients received standard care and were not treated with ELR. ELR lasted significantly longer in the remaining 11 ALF patients (24.4 ± 9.0
